In many classrooms, art is treated as a decorative add-on rather than a cognitive tool. Simultaneously, art is often avoided because students fear they lack talent, which prevents them from participating in the creative process, resulting in sterile charts, graphs, and models that do not effectively communicate scientific information.
In this session, teachers will learn how to use artistic elements (line, shape, form, color, texture, and space) not for decoration, but as a language to communicate information about scientific systems, processes, and phenomena. Instruction that shows how the elements of art connect to science concepts and tools that support the development of art empower students to create without fear.
