NOTES FROM THE SURFACE

New Year, New Look!

September is officially here and classrooms are buzzing with activity! Students are showing off new styles, updated wardrobes, and standing a little taller after a summer of growth. Science With Depth has been growing too, and the streamlined website is ready for its big reveal!

You can now explore the PD offerings as a color-coded series with clear pathways showing how each session builds on the last. You’ll also find previews of the real science tools you keep after every session! Plus, reaching out is easier than ever with quick-access contact links on every page. Reach out to me at holly@sciencewithdepth.com to share your thoughts on the updated website!

THE THERMOCLINE

The thermocline is the layer of rapid transition from the warm surface to the cool, deep ocean. It represents those moments where instruction shifts from surface-level facts to exhilarating, inquiry-based depth.

On September 22nd, the autumnal equinox brings nearly equal hours of day and night, a moment of balance. We hear a lot about balance in our daily lives, but what does balance look like in the science classroom?

Science standards are designed to be three-dimensional, blending Content (DCIs), the Skills of scientists (SEPs), and the Thinking Processes that connect it all (CCCs). Yet too often instruction tilts heavily toward content alone. When we rely solely on listing and memorizing facts, science can feel static and inert, which is the exact opposite of true scientific discovery!

Science With Depth helps educators restore that balance. I provide practical frameworks that integrate the SEPs and CCCs right alongside your content. When students master the skills and thinking processes of scientists, they gain the confidence to dive into any phenomenon, inside the classroom or beyond school walls.

Ready to bring true three-dimensional balance to your team this year?

THE ABYSS

Chasing Silhouettes

Mark your calendars: the autumnal equinox on September 22nd is the perfect moment to launch Chasing Silhouettes with your class! This zero-cost, high-yield investigation weaves together Scale, Mathematical Thinking, Modeling, and Earth & Space Science in a single outdoor lesson.

Beyond the data, this activity offers a powerful reflection for students: even when an object seems small, shifting the angle of light creates a far-reaching impact. Ready to help your students discover their own reach this fall?
