NOTES FROM THE SURFACE
May the Fourth Be With You!
Today we celebrate epic adventures in galaxies far, far away, but you don’t need a spaceship to find exotic new worlds. Incredible discoveries are waiting right under your students' noses (or microscopes!). Whether they are revealing the hidden colors in sunlight or navigating a forest path, these experiences are exciting, but they can also be overwhelming.
That’s where Science With Depth comes in. Think of these strategies as your "Jedi holocron" - tools to help you guide students through the chaos of observation overload and down into a focused, deeper understanding of how our world works.
Let’s explore the galaxy of your classroom together!

THE THERMOCLINE
The thermocline is the layer of rapid transition from the warm surface to the cool, deep ocean. It represents those moments where instruction shifts from surface-level facts to exhilarating, inquiry-based depth.
Students are naturally curious, but a flood of new facts can feel like a random storm. To find our way to the "cool" water of deep understanding, we need a compass. Asking questions is a foundational Science and Engineering Practice that transforms "random" into "intentional." This is why May’s thermocline PD focus is:
Creating Guiding Questions
In this PD session, we will build leveled questions. You’ll learn to structure questions that logically lead students from curiosity to evidence-based arguments. You’ll walk away with a universal strategy to anchor any unit, ensuring your students aren't just swimming, they’re diving with purpose.

Foundations
Foundations are the invisible structures that support everything we see. This month, we are digging into the ultimate foundation: Soil. Is soil just dirt? Not even close! It’s a thriving, living ecosystem. Learn how I prepared my garden for success and how you can bring this foundational "micro-world" into your classroom using vermicomposting.
